Doctors engage in knowledge sharing at GAPIO Meet in the city
The city has no dearth of doctors for two days now. Not less than 400 to 500 delegates, who are practicing doctors from various parts of the country or doctors of Indian origin practicing globally, have engulfed themselves in mind boggling discussions and talks on various relevant topics of healthcare to enhance their knowledge on the subjects. These delegates are participants in the 6th International Conference of Global Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (GAPIO), held at Hotel Sheraton in Bangalore on January 9 and 10, 2016.
GAPIO is an attempt to bring together the intellectual and technical strength of physicians of Indian origin from India and abroad that can be a vital force in development of Indian Healthcare sector.
Apart from the scientific feast, various other events during this two-day meet will include a Gandhi Fair, the funds generated from which will be utilized for healthcare charitable work. There will also be a special postal cover release by Hon Union Minister Mr Anant Kumar.
“A meet of this level aims to empower doctors of Indian origin to attain highest professional standards, to provide affordable good quality healthcare, to contribute to local and regional community development, and thereby reduce health inequalities globally,” said Dr Sanku Surender Rao, President GAPIO and a practicing doctor from the US.
Addressing the media, Dr Ramesh Mehta, Vice President GAPIO and President of British Association of Physicians or Indian Origin (BAPIO) said, “Out of 1.2 million Indian doctors working all over the world, over 50,000 of them work in United Kingdom. With huge shortage of doctors in India, we are trying to bring in services of about 15,000 retiring doctors from the United Kingdom to provide their expertise to the short staffed medical institutions across the country.
Speaking to the media Dr Jairam, GAPIO Joint Secretary and Organizing Chairman and Chairman and Group Medical Director, Columbia Asia Hospitals, said, “This is a yearly event which brings together physicians of Indian origin from across the globe to interact and share learnings with each other. The insightful talks by various specialists will be a learning experience for doctors attending the event. The conference hopes to provide a road map for the activities of GAPIO towards improving the health of the community of our wonderful nation. We are honoured to have the opportunity to organise GAPIO 2016.”
This conference would be graced by IMA (Indian Medical Association) President Dr S.S.Agarwal, NBE (National Board of Examination) Executive Director Dr Bipin Batra, KMC (Karnataka Medical Council) member and KGMOA (Karnataka Government Medical Officer’s Association) President Dr Veerabhadraiah, Apollo Hospital Group Chairman Dr Prathap C Reddy and various other accomplished healthcare leaders of National and International repute.
The first day of the GAPIO Meet had a series of insightful talks and discussions including the key note address on ‘Changing trends in the management of type 2 diabetes’ by Dr. Irl B Hirsch, the professor of medicine at the University Of Washington School Of Medicine. Dr. Maheshkumar M Lakhe, Consultant – Internal Medicine & Infectious Diseases, Columbia Asia Hospital delivered an interesting talk on antibiotic abuse and how to minimize it.
Gynaecology was another important area of discussion on the first day of this symposium. While Dr. Sapna Ahuja, Chief of Reproductive Medicine & IVF, Columbia Asia Hospital, Whitefield spoke about the advances of IVF treatment, Dr, Shafalika Boriah, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Columbia Asia Hospital, Hebbal highlighted the progress in minimal invasive surgery in Gynaecology. Dr. Arvind Kasargod, Consultant – Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care, Columbia Asia Referral Hospital, Yeshwanthpur delivered a talk on the challenges of Paediatric Intensive Care Unit in India.
The second day of the conference will focus on discussions related to oncology, GI and liver diseases, cardiology and neurosciences. A resourceful talk on Integrated GI Care Concept will be delivered by Dr. Govind Nandkumar, Chief of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Columbia Asia Hospital. Dr A S Soin from Medanta Institute of Liver Transplantation and Regenerative Medicines will speak on the journey of liver transplantation in India. Dr Prabhakar Shetty, Chief of Cardiology, Columbia Asia Referral Hospital, and Dr Karthik Vasudevan, consultant, cardiology, Columbia Asia Referral Hospital will deliver talks on various aspects of cardiovascular risks.
